Classification Weeds are considered any plant that’s growing in an area where it is not wanted – plant pests! Weeds may be native to an area or introduced into an area. Their seeds can be surprisingly viable and strong. Some of them can remain dormant (inactive) for up to seven years and then spring up without warning. Because the definition of a weed is a function of its location, they are classified as beneficial or not beneficial. We all know weeds that are not beneficial. They grow in our lawns and gardens changing the appearance and “robbing” our other plants of water and nutrients from the soil. Once the ground has been cultivated (made ready for planting) for our plants of choice, weeds will often appear because the conditions are also made right for them. The following are some of the more common weeds. Do some simple identification of weeds in your own environment.
  • Clover
  • Dandelions
  • Goose grass
  • Chickweed
  • Crabgrass
  • Lamb’s quarter
  • Foxtail
  • Mustard
  • Nimblewill
