Bee-Coming a Bee Genius

beebeebee

Introduction
Have you ever wondered where honey comes from?  Have you ever wondered about how bees are born and the jobs they do?

In this WebQuest you will learn all about bees, what they do, and why they are important.

Task
Your job is to compile a "Bee Book" from all of the activities that you will complete in this bee unit.  You will make a front cover and a back cover and tie the book together with yarn.  When the unit is over, you will have your own book all about bees!

Process
Section One - Basics
Where did bees come from?  Watch this PowerPoint to learn about the history and basics of bees.  Answer the review questions at the end of the slides.

Now complete this map activity with the help of your teacher and the PowerPoint you just watched.  It will be page 1 of your bee book.

Section Two - Bee Body and Life Cycle
In this section, you are going to learn about the body and life cycle of a honey bee.  Watch this PowerPoint.  There will be a movie to watch about the life cycle of honey bees.

Here is an activity on the parts of the bee body.  This will be page 2 in your Bee Book.

Now, complete this life cycle activity using the following website.  This will be page 3 in your Bee Book.

Section Three - Jobs in the Colony
Just like humans specialize in different types of jobs, bees have different jobs too!  Go this this website and click through all of the categories.

Along with the 3 kinds of bees, there are different jobs that worker bees do.  Read each job description here.

Next, in this activity, match each job to its role in the colony.  This will be page 4 in your Bee Book.

Now, color each picture in the following link.  These pictures will be the next 2 pages in your Bee Book.

Section Four - Communication
You have learned that there are certain worker bees that give messages to one another.  In this movie, learn about bee dances.

Section Five - Honey Products
How long has honey been in the world?  Watch this PowerPoint to find out.

Now complete this activity about bee hives.

How many things can you think of that are made with honey?  There are a lot!  Your teacher has picked a recipe to make that uses honey.  Enjoy the sweet taste!

Conclusion
Your Bee Book is almost finished!  But first you will make a front and back cover.  Then, you will tie it together with yarn.

Click here for the front cover.  Color the front cover.  Glue it to a piece of construction paper.  For the back cover, use a piece of construction paper.

Click here for the Table of Contents.

Put your book together in the order listed on the Table of Contents.  The page numbers are also on the bottom of each activity page.  Use a hole punch to place holes on the left side of each paper, including the front and back covers.  To finish, tie a piece of yarn into each of the holes.

Evaluation
Share and read your bee book to a family member.  Teach them what you have learned about bees.
