Water Conservation and Management

Part I - Conservation
How much water does it take to...?

Take this quick quiz on water usage.  You may be surprised at how much water simple activities can use!  After you finish, check your answers.

Were you surprised by how much water is required to complete daily activities?  Imagine if you took a 9 minute shower instead of of a 10 minute shower.  Cutting one minute off of a shower saves approximately 5 gallons of water.  If you shower every day for 9 minutes instead of 10, you can save 35 gallons of water!  Imagine is 10 of your friends did the same thing.  For one week, you would save 350 gallons of water.  The savings can add up quickly.

Play this game and fill in the blanks here with all of the tips you can do to save water in and around your house.

Part II - Treatment
The water treatment proces...

Click through each link on this website to learn more about the water treatment process.

Now write a 10 sentence paragraph about a water droplet that goes through the treatment process.  Be as specific as possible and use the following vocabulary: coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, storage.  In your paragraph explain what the water droplet (you can give it a name!) goes through and what it is experiencing.  Be sure to demonstrate the cyclical process of water treatment.  Remember to edit for correct grammar, capitilization, and punctuation.

Part III - The Clean Water Team
Join the team...

Begin by reading the introduction from the Clean Water Team comic book, sponsored by the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture.  Full copies may be purchased as www.ageducate.org.

Define the following vocabulary on a piece of notebook paper.
watershed, water pollution, point source pollution, non-point source pollution, runoff

Now learn what it takes to be part of the Clean Water Team!  Here is an overview of the team members.  You will also need to use the internet for additional research.  You teacher will assign you one of the roles and would will create a Powerpoint presentation explaining what your team member does to protect water and practice best water management. 

Team Members: Farmer, Soil & Water Conservation Expert, Water Treatment Specialist, Certified Crop Advisor, Research Specialist

Organize the slides this way:
Slide One: your name, the role of your worker, the date, a title for your presentation

Slide Two: Define what your worker does.  What are the primary responsibilities of your worker?  What do they focus on in their job?  Where do they spend most of their time working?

Slide Three: Find a picture online of someone who does this occupation.  Be sure to include the citation on this slide.

Slide Four: What problem does this worker try to fix or prevent?

Slide Five: What tools or equipment does this worker use regularly in their job?  Include a picture of at least one piece of equipment.

Slide Six: Credits - Say where you got your information, cited in proper format.  Each source should be on its own line.

Conclusion
What do I do now?

Now that you know all about the water treatment process and how to save water, you can decide how you will choose to conserve water with your family.  Choose 3 things taht you can do at home to help save water.  Choose 3 people that you an share all of your new knowledge with.
