Become familiar with the farm and learn all about people in the community that work on or around the farm.

This WebQuest can be done as a class for younger students.  It is designed for kindergarten through second grade, but can be made more complex for older students.

Text Box: Unit Notes and Process

1.        Read the book Farming by Gail Gibbons.  While reading, especially show the students different pictures throughout the book.

2.        Watch Farmer Brown run all over the world!  This interactive movie is geared for lower grades and will help the students   recognize different farm scenes.  You will need sound and online movie capabilities in your classroom.

3.        If you click on each picture, a page about each job will come up.  At the bottom of the page there is a suggested book to read to go along with each career.

4.

There is also an activity to complete along with each job.  These can be done after you introduce each job, or can be used as a   reviewing tool if you introduce all the jobs in a row.  You can encourage the students to keep all of their activities, or you can        bind them together by punching holes and stringing the holes together.

Text Box: Conclusion

Students will each make a vest about the career they chose out of the 5 studied.  Encourage student to bring in a brown paper bag prior to this activity.

Follow the lesson plan found here, from the Iowa Farm Bureau.

«   The lesson calls for a brain storm of different careers in agriculture, but have the students recall the 5 studied.

«   Create a model that the students could trace for their vest.

«   If you have an old Boy Scout or Girl Scout vest with patches, you can bring that in as an example of a vest that represents something with pictures and drawings.

Text Box: Evaluation

For the vest:

o   Check to make sure the student wrote the name of the career on the vest.

o   Check to make sure the student decorated the vest with appropriate pictures and drawings of their and related careers.

o   Check to make sure the vest is correctly cut from the model and can be worn by the student.

o   Check to make sure the vest shows effort.

o   Talk to each student about their vest.  Have the student tell you about their drawings and things placed on the vest.

For the activities:

o   Check to make sure the correct colors were used on the picture.

o   Check to make sure the student followed the directions.
