Scheduling a Workshop
Description
The Virginia Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) Elementary Workshops are designed for K-5 teachers. This program, matched with Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL), provides hands-on activities, grade level specific lessons, a classroom set of laminated Virginia maps, classroom resources and information about Virginia agriculture.
The Garden in the Classroom Workshops are designed for K-6 teachers. These workshops provide resources and information about incorporating gardening activities in to your classroom curriculum and information on planning and starting a school garden. The workshop includes hands-on activities, grade level specific lessons focusing on plants and gardening, classroom resources and information about Virginia agriculture.
The Middle School Science Workshops are designed for 6-8 science teachers. These workshops provide resources and information on renewable fuels, watersheds (SOL 6.5), the management of natural resources (SOL 6.8), the understanding of food harvest and production (SOL LS.12), and the investigation of environmental issues (SOL LS.12).
AITC also offers workshops to pre service teachers attending Virginia colleges and universities. These workshops provide grade level specific lessons, hands on activities, classroom resources and information about Virginia agriculture. In addition, once students have graduated and contact AITC with their teaching assignment, AITC will send additional resources and a New Teacher’s Welcome Kit.
AITC staff will work with school systems and individual schools to plan workshops that will truly benefit their teachers.
|
Time
The best AITC workshops last approximately three hours to five hours. They can be held after school or during in-service days. AITC also offers 2-3 day summer institutes that feature field trips to local farms, nurseries and/or agriculture businesses.
|
Location
Workshops are usually held at local schools or at another centrally located area, such as the school board office. Pre-service workshops are conducted on campus at the specific college or university that requests sessions.
|
Cost
The Virginia Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom is a not-for-profit organization. Workshops are provided free of charge because of the generosity of individuals, organizations corporations and grants.

Testimonial
"The program provides my student teachers with useable curriculum materials at a critical time in their pre-service program. The workshops are always well organized and lots of fun. My students leave the workshop feeling more confident about their ability to integrate science, mathematics, and social studies using agriculture into their teaching."
- Assistant Professor Jacqueline T McDonnough PhD, VCU
