Corn - The majority of the corn produced in Virginia feeds the commonwealth’s poultry and beef industry. Corn for grain is Virginia’s 10th largest commodity accounting for $94.7 million in receipts in 2004. With rising gas prices, corn is being looked to as a renewable source of energy in the form on ethanol. Ethanol consumed more than 1.2 billion bushels of corn in 2004. Ethanol helps the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and displacing the harmful additive MTBE from reformulated gasoline. Virginia Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) offers a comprehensive educational program designed to foster an understanding of agriculture. AITC uses agriculture as a medium to teach social studies, language arts, math and science to K-8 teachers.

Teachers who attend AITC training programs receive SOL-matched curriculum, information on Virginia products, books for their classrooms and many other resources. Additionally, they participate in grade-level appropriate hands-on activities, which support the Virginia SOLs. AITC offers elementary, middle school, Garden in the Classroom, and pre-service workshops. For more information click on “Scheduling a Workshop” or view the “Workshop Preview”.

All AITC teacher professional development seminars and supporting materials are provided to teachers and their schools at no cost through the Virginia Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom.
